Moving to Dartmouth, Jo fell in love with the colourful landscape and wildlife. Morellos is championing the most colourful, iconic bird of our rivers and streams - the Kingfisher.
Hunting from a waterside perch, it waits, perfectly still, for its next meal to swim into range. Kingfishers’ eyes are adapted for both air and water, allowing astonishingly precise dives.
A pair will raise their chicks in a nest burrow, tunnelled into the river-bank. Once fledged, the parents soon chase the youngsters off; kingfishers are territorial, and will fight fiercely to defend their feeding patch. Vibrant and fiercely independent, the kingfisher embodies the energy and beauty of our rivers that Morellos celebrates.
